[real3dflipbook "https://www.thefestivalofstorytellers.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/9781947765047_TFOS.pdf"]

A story where a young boy embarks on an incredible journey alongside his doll, given to him by his mother. As the story progresses, the history of the mysterious doll is revealed, and throughout the story, more and more is discovered about this unique toy. John loses connection with a meaningful person in his life, which is his mom, because of the divorce. The story also contains scenes with several family members that provide a meaningful impact on John’s life. John admires some of these characters more than the others, but the one he shows absolutely no passion towards is his stepmother. He ends up moving in with his dad and his wicked stepmom. After a specific occurrence, he ends up not being able to talk and no one knows why. Every time he opens his mouth, gibberish comes out. His parents look into this mysterious problem, but no one can figure out the reason behind his disability. Several incidences throughout the story cause the little John to despise his stepmom more and more, thus eventually messing up the relationship with his dad. The stepmom’s tactics and strategies finally help her in succeeding to turn John’s own blood against him. This burning rage becomes instilled into John’s mind, causing him to make some irrational decisions towards his doll. As if the doll’s life was somehow intertwined with the stepmother’s, the same results rained down on his stepmom. The author manages to end the story with the reader knowing what happened but still having some questions.

This book is a little darker than I anticipated even with the title. Once I got into it though it was very enjoyable, it took some time to get to that point. It reminded me of the movie Annabelle. It wasn’t very scary, but it was well enough written that at certain points it may make you want to look around the room to make sure you haven’t gotten lost in the book. I don’t usually read stories like this, so it was very different from my usual choice. I enjoyed it though which honestly surprised me. It was a bit too short for my liking, but the more I think about it I don’t know how you could possibly make the book any longer. The only thing I didn’t seem to like about it was it had a very abrupt ending and it really left me questioning I’m what really happened. If there is a sequel out there I’ll be getting it as soon as I find it. Basically, if you’re looking for a quick yet entertaining read, pick this up because you won’t be disappointed in the slightest.

D like Doll E Like Evil by Omid Olfet is an interesting, though strange type of book. Max and Mary find themselves in an unhappy marriage and decided to separate, only to find out that Mary was pregnant. Max wanted to abort the baby, but between his mother and Mary he relented and a few months later John entered the world. The courts awarded custody to Max because of financial reasons and soon he re-married, making Sara John’s new step-mother. Sara was unable to have children of her own; hated John; and was not very nice to him when Max was not around. On her way to visit her son one day Mary came across a very special doll and decided to give it to John. A witch had previously owned the doll and Mary decided that it was just rubbish, even though she thought she heard the doll speak. Max and the doll became inseparable and from first sight Sara wanted to take it from him. Things spiral downward after four year old Max is left alone all day without his precious doll while Sara shopped. Lies and deceit follow and eventually she is found mutilated and murdered not too far from their home with a mysterious note that points to Mary. Did Max and the doll play a part in this murder? Even though this story has an interesting plot, it was difficult for me to read at times because I could not always tell who was speaking and there are grammatical errors in need of a good editor. The doll did not play as much of a roll as I expected but overall the couple of hours I took to read it were intriguing and it did shine a light on the subject of child abuse.
