Madam’s Mini

Hubert is good friends with Madam, a very pleasant elderly lady, who moved to his world all the way from England, and brought with her a snazzy little 66 Mini Cooper S. Madam was taking Hubert for a drive one day, and the two of them found themselves at a stoplight, next to an obnoxious man driving a loud and powerful 57 Chevrolet Corvette. What would be the last thing Madam would do? Even if he were to laugh at the much smaller car? Surely she would not challenge him to a road race. But that is exactly what Madam does. She may be driving a small car but she has a big heart, and little tolerance for people who insult others and make fun of their differences. Hubert was both amazed and worried when she challenged that guy in a race to the city limits.

I purchased this book for my 2 1/2 year old son. To be truthful, I also bought the book because I own a ’65 Morris Mini Cooper S, and I thought it would be a good book to add to my collection.

I will need to order another one for myself as my son can not let ‘Madam’s Mini’ out of his sight. He loves the beautifully drawn, vibrantly colored illustrations, and the story is very fun to read. It is his bedtime story of choice!

This is a book that I feel spans a wider age range than advertised. My son does not yet understand all of the story, but he loves pointing at the pictures of the Mini, which he recognizes as being the same as “Daddy’s car”. As he gets older, he will enjoy reading the story and understanding the positive message within about good things coming in small packages. Of course I equally enjoyed the book, with it’s great illustrations, and Madam’s humorous British sayings were entertaining. Therefore, I’d say the age range is at least 2 1/2 to 39 years!

Definitely worth a read.

Students grades 1-6 and teachers sure enjoy the story of Madam and her Mini! It is a fun story to read and listen to. My students enjoyed the different terms used for parts of the Mini and of course, the exciting race. The story as well as the pictures keep you engaged the whole time. What colorful and lively pictures!
