My brain usually starts churning around 4:30 a.m. so I start jotting down ideas in my notes app, and then around 6:00 a.m., I jump up, make myself a Chai tea, and start writing.
When an idea for a story hits me and it starts to develop into a concept, and then a premise, I get excited. If my vision gels, and I know I’m about to embark on an adventure with new characters, I can’t wait to get to work. Sometimes I’ll test an opening before I do an outline. If the premise is workable, I dive into the project.
I typically build the characters so intensely first that their story practically writes itself. They live and breathe in my head and then when I sit down to write, their story unfolds relatively quickly! I always grab a cup of coffee, a glass of water, and a notebook before I get started. I suppose that counts as a ritual!
I schedule writing for particular times of the day and show up ready to go. It helps to be part of a co-writing group. I typically co-write at least three times a week.
My dreams
Every other week I host a writing group of about 10 writers and they have all been good to write, but me. I just can’t get an idea in my brain. I have writers block and I don’t know what to do about it. Nothing has helped me get into the writers zone. Help!!!
